Printing in a Business

As a self-confessed bookworm, there is nothing in the world I love more than reading. I am very thankful that with the developments in printing, I have access to a lot of books and reading materials. Printing has given not only me, but many generations of humankind, access to knowledge and a wide variety of information.

I could not imagine myself existing during the times when woodblock printing was used to print books. With the innovations in the printing technology since woodblock printing and Gutenberg’s invention of the first printing press, more and more people find that printed information is getting more accessible, more widely available, and affordable. Gone were the days when only the elite in society can afford to purchase books.

Printing has affected how society has grown all throughout these years. Aside from the economic impact and how it spurred intellectual growth, I think what stand out most is how the sharing of ideas and knowledge has been accelerated by printing. And this has been a force behind a lot of changes in society.

Where It Starts With Organizational Behavior

The mysteries of organizational behavior have yet to be unleashed. So many companies get so caught up in meaningless money making efforts that organizations get lost in it all and end up with poor performing employees and a failing business. It is a stretch to think that focusing more on your employees than your customers – or to focus on them equally. The truth is that it comes from the top of the food chain. When the CEO cares about employees, VPs and managers will filter down those same feelings.

So what kinds of things do organizations’ need to focus on to improve the overall work environment? According to experts in the industry, businesses that focus on the well-being of their employees will achieve the highest level of customer service, which would translate into the highest performance of the organization in general.

For example, one of my favorite people works in Utah county real estate and has her own company. She focuses constantly on making sure employees are happy and know that care will translate directly to the customers. In essence, take care of your employees and your business will thrive.

The Convenience Of Mobile Devices

With the invention of mobile devices, one can really claim that it is possible to hold the world in one’s hand. What was thought of as impossible a few decades ago are materializing now with the innovations in mobile devices and developments in technology. Different technologies have been integrated into these mobile devices.

It was not so long ago when one needs to bring cell phone, camera or video recorder, organizer, and recorder separately. Now, there are mobile devices like MP5s that combine these different technologies. You can also fit in your computer or your stereo player now in your purse. It seems that everything is getting smaller and/or more compact and very convenient. In fact, mobile devices can now be used for asset tracking.

With the convenience brought by these mobile devices, there is also increased functionality. These mobile devices give the users improved capabilities and more freedom. And the technology of these mobile devices keeps on developing and helps make the quality of our life better.

The Marketing Mix and the 4 P's

What are the keys to marketing? Of course each industry has its own special environment where different techniques can be used an some general rules will not apply. But, straight from your business school textbook, the “marketing matrix” consists of product, price, place, and promotion. The are also known as the 4 P’s.

You have to know your product. What is it? Why do people need it or want it? What needs to be improved or changed? The service industry sells the intangible product of service. The same principals can apply to service as well as tangible products.

Price. Of course the price of your product should be pinpointed to allow for maximum profit AND affordability for customers. Market share and completion can also be significant factors in the pricing of your good or services.

The place refers to where your goods can be purchases. A retail store would have a much heavier influence with place than an online store would. Still, place is an important factor for any company’s marketing efforts.

Promotion is essentially the communication methods used by marketers to reach their target markets in the marketplace.

Take all these factors into consideration when trying to reach your customer and target market. The four P’s are used in many different ways and each industry will need to adjust to fit their current economic situation. For example, an asset tracking company who primarily does business on the internet would not direct its efforts in the same way that a local restaurant would. Take it all into account and plan out the best form of attack.

Flaws in the Business Educational System 1: Non-Entrepreneurial Attitude

When I look back at my college experience, I remember a lot of great experiences that have enriched my life and stimulated my brain. Overall I’m grateful for what I came away with from college. However, there is one important point I would like to make about college that I think really needs to change. My college experience essentially trained me to be a great employee. And I don’t want to be a great employee; I want to be a great employer. The entrepreneurial spirit was not present like I wished it was.

There is nothing wrong with being a great employee, but the options are limited for those who want to try and prepare themselves to be entrepreneurs. Phrases in class frequently included “When you boss does this….” and “How will you interact with your manager when….”. These phrases are taken at face value and never really challenged. I blame myself to that. I also think the educational system needs to take into account the fact that not all students want to end up being employees. I think the most I ever received was the assumption that all entrepreneurs should just work for someone until they figure it out on their own.

You never know what is in store for someone who goes out on a limb to start their own company. It can be one of the most exciting things someone will ever experience in their career. I had a friend from Copell, Texas. Instead of going out to work everyday, he went out and started his own Copell printing shop. Find out what really stirs up some passion in you and go for it.
